Turon

Makes 3

Ingredients:

Cooking oil
1 Yellow Plantain
Brown Sugar
Lumpia wrappers
Flour paste (some water and flour mixed together to form a paste)

Directions:
1. Cut plantain into 3 slices, length wise

2. Take one lumpia wrapper and have it face diagonally in a diamond shape. Place Plantain Across the bottom half of the wrapper.

3. Sprinkle one teaspoon of brown sugar to cover the plantain.

4. Roll lumpia wrapper until plantain is covered and seal edge with flour paste

5. Repeat with remaining 2 pieces

6. In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When oil is hot, place turon in the pan. Fry until golden brown for about 2-3 minutes and then flip onto the other side. The brown sugar will caramelize at this point

7. Remove from pan, drain excess oil and let cool. Enjoy!

Turon is easily one of my family’s favorite desserts. It can be found at gatherings, made on a random Wednesday night or bought from the local Filipino restaurant. Growing up, my favorite part of the turon was the lumpia wrapper with the caramel dripping on the outside. I would eat the outside while my mom had the plantains. Now as an adult, I can appreciate the dessert as a whole.

Before Easeful Evenings, I was Lola’s House, emulating the energy of my ancestors through cooking (which I like to believe I still do, just under a different name.) My menu consisted of lumpia, pancit, empanadas, and turon. And that was it. Pick up was on the weekends, and I was busy with orders. My customers ranged from coworkers, old schoolmates, and new faces who took a chance on my cooking through finding my menu online or word of mouth. Turon was a hit amongst my customers, and I’m sure I’ll bring it back on the menu some day.

Turon, or banana lumpia,  is a traditional Filipino dessert that originated from communities that lived near banana trees and crop fields and would use excess bananas to make the dessert. It is now a popular sweet treat that can be found at street vendors and restaurants. It can be made with saba banana, sweetened and ripe jackfruit, and even sweet potatoes. Have you tried Turon before?
